Can You Drink Coffee While Pregnant?
The Answer Might Surprise You!
I’m sure you’ve seen the social media post, the magazine article, and the T-shirt that says “Coffee Is My Savior.” It’s everywhere. It’s even on your mug right now. Coffee is ubiquitous in our society — you can’t walk down the street without passing a Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or a gas station with a coffee dispenser out front.
This post will give you the information to decide whether your daily cup of joe is safe during pregnancy.
What happens when your body processes caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant that affects your brain and nervous system. Caffeine travels through your bloodstream and into your brain when you drink coffee. It can cause insomnia (difficulty falling asleep), headaches, and nausea.
Caffeine can also affect your heart rate. A few cups of coffee may make you feel more alert, but too much caffeine can lead to a rapid heartbeat and palpitations. This can be dangerous for pregnant women because it puts them at risk for miscarriage or preterm labor — and it’s hazardous for fetuses whose hearts are still developing!
